Parented vs. Unparented Classes

GoPlay! Programs offer two different formats of play - one that includes the parents (or guardians!) and one that lets our coaches and kids do all the 'work'.

Parented Classes

In our Parented Classes, you and your child will work together on the fundamental skills of the sport, and parents will assist in teaching and demonstrating the many life skills taught through active play.

Parented Classes are offered for kiddos between 18 months and 3 years old and throughout the session, our Coaches will work with both parents and the kiddos, providing hands-on structure, guidance and support.

Parented Classes will focus on developing gross motor skills while learning about sports and developing independence over time. They will include activities with the parents to gain your kiddos trust in the process and comfort within a group and in sport. They will also include moments of unparented play so that your kiddo has a chance to interact independently with the Coaches and their classmates. This helps them to also learn and experience teamwork, communication, and patience, gaining continued independence along the way! Our balance between 'parented' and 'unparented' play ensures a seamless transition for your kiddo as they develop from 'parented' to 'unparented' classes.

These classes are a great way for parents and kids to work together as they build confidence and physical literacy, all while meeting and socializing with other parents and kids in your own community.

Unparented Classes

In our Unparented Classes, our Coaches do the work! Your kiddo will gain confidence as they work with the Coach and other GoPlayers to learn the fundamentals of the sport.

Unparented Classes are offered for kiddos who are 3+ and they must be potty-trained to participate solo. If your child is 3, you can decide whether you register them for a Parented or Unparented Class, based on their abilities and your desired level of involvement.

These classes are adapted to suit the skill level of the kids... not the other way around. As kids in these programs develop, so will the classes! They are also inclusive and our Coaches will ensure that all kiddos get involved in the play, even if they are feeling a little shy to start.

For our outdoor programs, parents are asked to still stay at the field or be nearby at one of our Parents Stay & Play sessions. In our indoor programs, parents stay on location for the first 15-20 minutes to meet the coaches, play warm-up games, and help their kiddos get comfortable. After that, parents are asked to leave the facility as the coaches start working with the kids independently. Fostering independence and confidence is just one of the many skills our GoPlay! coaches will work on with your kiddos and we have found the most effective way to do this is for them to have unparented time with the coaches.

Parents are invited (highly encouraged!) to attend the entirety of the last class in the session to actively participate, play games, and have fun with their child... all in all, a great way to wrap up the season!
